Spiritual Disciplines
Over the coming weeks I plan to re-read the book Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, by Donald S. Whitney. I have read this book once before, about 9 months ago, and found it quite a good book to read. In fact I wrote the following review of it:
This is an excellent book that looks at what are 10 core spiritual disciplines - Bible intake, prayer, worship, evangelism, serving, stewardship, fasting, silence and solitude, journaling, learning. Each of these is covered in a single chapter (except bible intake, which gets 2) making it very accessible to read and be impacted by. The disciplines are looked at with biblical reasoning as well as historical examples, and every chapter includes application that encourages you to put the discipline into practice in your own walk with God. I found every chapter to be a challenge that I will need to follow up on, and intend to re-read this book sooner rather than later.
Wellit is almost approaching the later rather than the sooner, so I am now reading it again. The forward in fact recommends 3 readings, with only a months break in between each reading, so I will have to read it again a third time quite soon. My intention as I read it this time though, it to really ingest what I am reading, and to make notes as I go. I am also planning to review each chapter, to really consolidate what I have learnt, and to set myself some challenges to follow up. Hopefully by doing so I will be holding myself accountable to properly understand and learn what I read.
